Stephen Howell

Software is an infinite canvas. As a developer, I approach software not only analytically but also creatively. I believe software is not only engineered but is also crafted; it is both a science and an art. This is most exemplified with front end development, but even back end or infrastructure requires creativity to produce the best software.

Interests

Apart from being a web developer, I enjoy most of my time being outdoors. In the winter, I am an avid skier and novice ice climber. During the warmer months here in Colorado, I enjoy mountain biking, free climbing, and kayaking.

When forced indoors, I follow a number of sci-fi and fantasy genre movies and television shows, I am an aspiring chef, and I spend a large amount of my free time exploring the latest technology advancements in the front-end web development world.

Personal Projects

I enjoy writing code in my spare time and have written a number of side-projects to either learn something new or to meet a need I have.

Meals tracker Ruby

A Rails app to track what my family has had for dinner each night. We use it for future meal planning and for knowing how old leftovers are in the fridge.

Group Retro Elixir

A real-time multiplayer website for teams to perform an Agile retrospective together. Currently used by my team at Stitch Fix for our retros.

Clue Elixir

A real-time multiplayer implementation of the game Clue. I used it as a way of teaching my self how to learn Elixir and its Phoenix web framework.

Temperature Monitor Rust

A program that ran on a BeagleBone Black to periodically read the ambient temperature from a connected sensor and submit it to an external database. I used it to keep track of how hot it was getting in my garage over the summer.

Christmas Tree Light Go

A bridge that allowed me to turn on or off my Christmas tree with an iPhone. It ran on a BeagleBone Black and was connected to a power outlet that could be activated by supplying a voltage. The program exposed itself as a HomeKit device which could be controlled by an iPhone.
